Full Field Bids for BC Spot

An overflow field of 2-year-old fillies is entered to vie for the final GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf “Win and You're In” berth in Wednesday's GIII JP Morgan Chase Jessamine S. at Keeneland. Larkin Armstrong's Harmonize (Scat Daddy) broke her maiden by a runaway four lengths at second asking in a driving rainstorm in Saratoga's P.G. Johnson S. Sept. 3 and has been installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite as the only stakes winner in the field. The bay is conditioned by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who has captured the Jessamine twice previously.

If Harmonize's recent victory was dominant, she will need to match the grit displayed by Clare View (Hard Spun) in her first two starts. The Lothenbach Stables homebred dropped a :22.94 final quarter-mile and missed by a nose behind stablemate Nobody's Fault (Blame) on debut going one mile at Arlington Aug. 9 and recently made use of her late kick to come out on the winning end of a photo, prevailing by a head in a Kentucky Downs maiden test Sept. 16. Trainer Chris Block said he called an audible and chose to enter his charge in this event rather than an allowance race after seeing how she came out of her maiden score.

“She's doing really well right now and I think a lot of the other fillies in there are just as good as she would likely face in an [allowance],” Block said. “What I really like about her is that she's mentally tough. She shows a lot of desire to compete and you really need that in a good racehorse–and it's something you can't train into them.”

Owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey and trainer Chad Brown teamed up to win the Jessamine with Kitten Kaboodle (Kitten's Joy) in 2013, but will go their separate ways in this year's renewal. The Ramseys, who finished second in Sunday's GIII Dixiana Bourbon S. with Camelot Kitten (Kitten's Joy), will be represented by another Kitten's Joy homebred in Sapphire Kitten. A rallying three-length winner on debut going six panels at Kentucky Downs Sept. 16, the Joe Sharp trainee has a pedigree that suggests that the stretch-out to a route of ground will not pose an issue.

Meanwhile, Brown sends out Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence's Theory of Change (Archarcharch), the expected co-second choice at morning line odds of 6-1. The dark bay rallied from last to annex her career debut at Saratoga Sept. 7 and has posted two workouts in the interim at the Spa in preparation for this second appearance. Moms Choice (Kitten's Joy) heads a quartet of entrants exiting the Sept. 5 Kentucky Downs Encore Juvenile Fillies S. The chestnut set the pace and held on to finish second beaten one length by Ruthless Quality (Elusive Quality) in her first try over the turf that day.
