French Target For South Seas

Trainer Andrew Balding said he is leaning towards running last year's G3 Solario S. winner South Seas (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains on May 14. The Qatar Racing colourbearer, who was second in last year's G1 Criterium International, faded out of contention late to finish fifth on seasonal debut in Newcastle's Burradon Conditions S. on Apr. 14.

“It was disappointing, though I blame myself for it,” Balding said. “It is a tough mile there for a first run of the season and it probably asked a bit too much of him. We live and learn and hopefully we will get it right next time.”

“It has still to be discussed what he does next but, personally, I would like to have a crack at the French 2000 Guineas, but we have to discuss it with the owners and representatives,” the trainer added.

South Seas still holds entries for the G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas and G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas.
