First Samurai Filly a Good 'Bet' in Arlington-Washington Lassie Romp

Backing up just two weeks after earning a maiden win courtesy of the Arlington stewards, Bet She Wins was given a peach of a ride by journeyman jockey Jose Lopez and left her rivals in the dust in the Arlington-Washington Lassie.

Drawn one from the outside in gate 12, Bet She Wins was on edge and brushed the gate at the break, then bumped with a rival and ultimately settled in the middle of the pack while managing to drop down onto the fence at a relatively early stage. Able to pinch ground rounding the turn, the gray filly was all the way up onto the heels of the leaders and in need of somewhere to go at the top of the lane. Pacesetting Richie'slilwildcat (Wildcat Heir) obliged, drifting away from the rail just enough to allow Bet She Wins through and from there it was simply a matter of how far.

“She had worked good on the Polytrack, and I didn't really have any other place to go,” winning trainer Chris Block said. “I told the owners that if she came out of the maiden race in good shape we were going to fire back in the Lassie. Hats off to Jose [Lopez].”

Lopez, who was in the saddle for trainer Robert Hale when Expect An Angel (Valid Expectations) upset the 2004 GIII Chaposa Springs H. at 39-1, added: “Basically I followed the instructions. Chris told me after the break to try to get over and it happened to be clear. I got over to the rail and it opened up.”

The winner's dam produced a filly by Verrazano this year and was bred back to Gemologist.
