Successful on two of his first three starts over six furlongs for the reinvigorated Mark Johnston stable, Whitman was a typical front-running type that the barn excels with and that yielded perfect results in a Newbury maiden July 2 and Nottingham nursery 15 days later. Unable to get to the lead as the dynamic Mayfair Lady (GB) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) beat him to it in a highly competitive nursery over that trip at York's Ebor meeting 12 days prior to this test, the dark bay ran with real credit to be third to that classy filly as the highweight there and quickly established dominion again this time. Tackled by Chiringuita in the final furlong, the homebred showed the kind of determination that Kingsley House runners are notorious for to ward off that challenge and secure an initial black-type win for him and his freshman sire. “He's going the right way and progressing with each race,” Johnston said. “This can be a difficult track, but because he traveled well he was able to handle the ridges. What was pleasing was to see him battle, he stuck on well when he needed to. We won't look too far ahead with him, we'll just take it one race at a time.”
