Near millionaire Firing Line (Line of David–Sister Girl Blues, by Hold for Gold) has been retired from racing, it was announced Tuesday evening. Stud plans have not yet been decided for the Arnold Zetcher colorbearer. A game and narrow second to accomplished 'TDN Rising Star' Dortmund (Big Brown) in the 2014 GI Los Alamitos Futurity, the Simon Callaghan pupil was just beaten by that same rival in the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. the following February before a 14 1/4-length romp in the GIII Sunland Derby. He was second behind Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) and ahead of Dortmund in the 2015 GI Kentucky Derby, and earned $976,000 from a race record of 8-2-4-0. “Firing Line was by far the best horse I've ever owned,” said Arnold Zetcher. “He gave us the thrill of a lifetime.” Out of GISP Sister Girl Blues, Firing Line was a $65,000 Keeneland November weanling, $150,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling and $240,000 Keeneland April Juvenile. His second dam produced Grade II winner Mint Lane (Maria's Mon), as well as the dams of this year's GIII Pat Day Mile S. winner Sharp Azteca (Freud) and Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. hero Bowies Hero (Artie Schiller).
