Fatale Bere Just Gets Up in Del Mar Oaks

Fatale Bere was the second sophomore filly of the day to become her young sire's first Grade I winner with an upset victory in the GI Del Mar Oaks Saturday evening. The 7-1 shot ran off the rail in eighth as Animosity (Animal Kingdom) was shadowed by Ms Bad Behavior (Blame) through opening splits of :23.26 and :47.01. Making rapid progress on the backstretch, the bay was four wide exiting the bend and surged to the front just in time to deny Ollie's Candy by a head.

“To win a Grade I is of great value and this is a filly that I scouted a year ago in France and purchased privately for owners that have been very loyal to the stable,” said winning trainer Leonard Powell. “The only instructions I said to Kent [Desormeaux] was to keep her covered up early. If you don't keep her covered up, she's rank, she pulls, sometimes the saddle goes forward. So the key is to keep her covered up, and then she's good enough to do the job.”

Fatale Bere won two of her three starts in mother country for Maryvonne Blot and trainer J. Boisnard before being privately purchased and transferred to Leonard Powell. Winning her U.S. debut in Santa Anita's Surfer Girl S. just a month after her final French start, the bay was fifth behind Saturday's GII Lake Placid S. winner Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies over this course in November and faded to eighth in the GIII Jimmy Durante S. here three weeks later. Returning to winning ways in Arcadia's GIII Providencia S. Apr. 7, Fatale Bere dropped back to seventh after her saddle slopped in the GII Honeymoon S. June 9 and was a non-factor sixth last time when making the trip east for the GI Belmont Oaks July 7.

Pedigree Notes:

Fatale Bere is from the first crop of Pedro the Great and became his first graded winner earlier this term with her Providencia score. She remains his only graded scorer, though he has one other black-type winner in France. Fatale Bere's dam produced a full-brother to the winner in 2017 named Helios des Sources (Fr).
