Eskendereya's Mitole Romps in Chick Lang

Mitole | MJC/Jim McCue

Mitole ran to the money with his third straight dominant victory in the Chick Lang. Hustling out to the early lead, the bay zipped through a first quarter in :21.67. Showing the way into the lane, he instantly bounded away from his foes to register yet another daylight victory.

“He's fast. Wow,” winning trainer Steve Asmussen said. “He's a special horse, he really is. His confidence level has gotten better, just the way he comes into a race, and acts during it, has been spectacular the past two or three races.”

The Hall of Famer continued, “We thought the off-track caused him his trouble away from the gates. We really worked on him in the gates and being a little quieter in there. Ricardo [Santana] has done a wonderful job with him away from the gate. He was in hand and traveling well today. That's made the difference. Going fast easily, but still being within himself. I am hoping for the [GII] Woody Stephens [June 9 at Belmont] off this. I felt he's a horse that does not work that impressively; we needed this race today to get to the seven-eighths of the Woody Stephens.”

Romping by 10 lengths to earn his diploma at third asking at Oaklawn Feb. 3, Mitole checked in second in a sloppy renewal of that venue's Gazebo S. three weeks later. Romping by seven lengths in a Hot Spring optional claimer on St. Patrick's Day, he made a mockery of the Bachelor S., going from gate-to-wire for a nine-length success.

Mitole is the second foal out of Indian Miss, a half-sister to ill-fated GSW Live Lively (Medaglia d'Oro). The 9-year-old mare is also responsible for a juvenile colt by Violence; a yearling filly by Creative Cause; and a 2018 colt by Oxbow.
