Dunlop To Train Almandin's Half-Brother For OTI

A Tertullian half-brother to last year's G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup winner Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) will go into training with Ed Dunlop in Newmarket after being bought by OTI Racing for €80,000 at last week's BBAG Yearling Sale through agent Tina Rau.

The dual-hemisphere ownership syndicate has Melbourne very much in mind when it comes to the colt's future despite the plan being for him to start his career in Europe.

“We're very excited to have been able to buy this horse in Germany and we'll hopefully see Ed return to Melbourne in three years' time with him. Let's hope he can go one better than he did with his great old champion Red Cadeaux,” said OTI Racing principal Terry Henderson on oti.com.au.

A son of the Listed-winning Tiger Hill (Ire) mare Anatola, the yearling colt is also a half-brother to G2 Gerling Preis winner Atempo (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). He was born and raised at his breeder's Gestüt Schlenderhan, which has already seen two Melbourne Cup winners reared in its paddocks in recent years. Along with Almandin, the Dr Christoph Berglar-bred Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), who led home Red Cadeaux (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) at Flemington in 2014, also spent his formative years at the historic stud on the outskirts of Cologne.

Commenting on his new recruit, Ed Dunlop said, “I'm absolutely delighted to have been asked to train such a well-bred horse for OTI. They are having lots of winners at the moment and have some nice horses racing for them around the world so I hope that this colt will be very lucky for OTI in the future.”

Dunlop's record in the Melbourne Cup includes three runner-up finishes for Red Cadeaux, while his G1 Ascot Gold Cup winner Trip To Paris (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}) was fourth in 2015 behind Prince Of Penzance (NZ) (Pentire {GB}) after finishing second in the G1 Caulfield Cup.
