Diana Glory For Adlerflug's Lacazar

The leading domestic protagonist for this Classic, Lacazar brushed aside Godolphin's hot favourite Wuheida to keep the prize at home, providing Peter Schiergen with a fourth renewal and jockey Andrasch Starke with a sixth in the process. Coming to prominence last time when winning the G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis over this trip at the start of July, the chestnut had shown progressive form when breaking her maiden at the fourth attempt at Krefeld May 14 and following up in a handicap at Cologne June 5. Shadowing the Godolphin raider throughout as they enjoyed perfect spots behind the leaders, Lacazar was sent up the inner at the top of the straight and was temporarily stopped in her run as Wuheida grabbed the lead with a quarter mile to race. Starke refused to panic and waited for the gap to open and when it did she was quickly past that rival with only Megera to be concerned about from the furlong pole.

Wuheida is States-bound now according to trainer Charlie Appleby. “Wuheida travelled well in the race and looked like the winner turning into the straight, but could not quite see the trip out,” he commented. “The ground, which was on the slow side of good and bit tacky, cannot be taken as an excuse. This was another solid run from the filly, who was having only the fourth start of her career. Wuheida was group 1-placed again and she is a work in progress. We will drop her back in trip and target her for the [GI] Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup [at Keeneland Oct. 14].”

Lacazar is the second and currently last foal out of the unraced Laey Diamond alongside the ill-fated G3 Ratibor-Rennen runner-up Liberry Gold (Ger), also by Adlerflug. The dam is a full-sister to the four-times group winner Liang Kay (Ger), whose career-high came in the G2 Oppenheim Union-Rennen while their respective dual listed-winning dam Linton Bay is also responsible for the Listed Kolner Stutenpreis scorer and G3 Kolner Herbst-Stuten-Meile third Laeya Star (Ger) (Royal Dragon). She in turn produced the G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen third Laeyos (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), while Linton Bay is also the dam of Litaara (Ger) (Wiener Walzer {Ger}), the fellow Gestut Haus Zoppenbroich-owned and Schiergen-trained filly who was only 12th in this race having been third in the G2 Diana-Trial.
