Deeply Undervalued continued his ascent with an off-the-pace victory in the GII Commonwealth Derby at Laurel Saturday. A dull sixth as the favorite on debut last August at Saratoga, the $200,000 KEESEP buy returned this term with a pair of runner-up finishes on the Belmont lawn May 7 and June 12 before graduating powerfully going 11 furlongs at the Spa July 30. A narrow second there behind one of today's rivals Aug. 27, the bay was let go as the fourth choice in this initial graded try.

Settling third-last while saving ground on the clubhouse turn, Deeply Undervalued was cajoled along by Manny Franco heading into the far turn and swept into contention five deep at the top of the lane. Charging to within a length of the front at the eighth pole, he surged by a trio of rivals passing the sixteenth marker and came home one length to the good of Isotherm, who won a three-way photo with longshot He'll Pay and favored American Patriot.

“I just let him be comfortable after he stumbled a little bit,” Franco said. “I tried to be covered up, but when it was time to move, I took him to the outside and he made a big run.” Click for the Equibase.com chart, the TJCIS.com PPs or the free Equineline.com catalogue-style pedigree.
