The progeny of Ballyhane Stud's Dandy Man (Ire) (Mozart {Ire}) proved popular during Tuesday's opening session of the Goffs Orby Sale, with his two youngsters on offer selling for an average of €177,500. That the dearest of that duo, the Ballyhane-consigned hip 191, was purchased by Hong Kong-based George Moore (€220,000) was no surprise, given the success of the stallion's son Peniaphobia (Ire), victorious in last year's G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint and twice placed in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai.

Thursday saw a shift in selling to the lower-key Sportsman's I Sale, and Ballyhane's Joe Foley won the battle for Dandy Man's hip 722, the first foal from Speronella (GB) (Raven's Pass). Consigned by Catherinestown Stud Farm on behalf of the filly's breeder Mary Davison, the Jan. 18 foal is a maternal granddaughter of GSW & MGISP Rosinka (Ire) (Soviet Star), who in turn is a half-sister to the good US middle-distance Grade I winner King's Drama (Ire) (King's Theatre {Ire}). This is also the extended female family of 2006 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas victrix Nightime (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

A pair of yearlings by Coolmore's young sire Zoffany (Ire) supplied the day's next two highest prices. Hanshen Thom, the assistant to bloodstock agent Justin Bahen, signed for hip 527, the second foal out of Diminish (Ire) (Raven's Pass), for a group of English investors. The bay colt is to be trained initially in Ireland by James Nash and could eventually end up in Hong Kong. The colt's third dam is European champion 3-year-old filly Golden Opinion (Slew o'Gold). Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock signed for hip 571, a filly out of Ihtiraam (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) from Church View Stables, who hails from the extended female family of Bert and Diana Firestone's half-brothers MGISW Winchester (Theatrical {Ire}) and MGSW Middleburg (Lemon Drop Kid).

A total of 237 offerings changed hands Thursday for gross receipts just over €4.6 million and a clearance rate of 81%. The average was €19,565 while the median settled at €15,000. Last year's Sportsman's Sale was conducted over a single session. Comparisons of the two auctions will be made following Friday's Sportsman's II Sale, which begins at 9.30am.
