Dalakhani Retired From Stud Duties

The Aga Khan's four-time Group 1 winner Dalakhani (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) has been retired from stud duties at his owner-breeder's Haras de Bonneval at the age of 16.

Trained by Alain de Royer Dupre, the grey son of dual winner Daltawa (Ire) (Miswaki) was beaten only once in nine starts when second to another Aga Khan homebred, Alamshar (Ire) (Key Of Luck), in the G1 Irish Derby.

His flawless juvenile season culminated in victory in the G1 Criterium International with further top-level wins coming in the following year's G1 Prix Lupin and G1 Prix du Jockey Club before the perfect swansong in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

A half-brother to two fellow stallions, Daylami (Ire) (Doyoun {GB}) and Dalghar (Fr) (Anabaa), Dalakhani reired to Gilltown Stud in Ireland in 2004 and remained there until being transferred to the Aga Khan's Normandy base for this year. His covering season was curtailed in April by an unspecified veterinary issue.

During a notable stud career, Dalakhani has sired eight Group 1 winners, including Classic victors Conduit (Ire), Duncan (GB), Reliable Man (GB) and Moonstone (Ire), with the latter now being the dam of this season's Derby second US Army Ranger (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), while young shuttle stallion Reliable Man, who emulated his sire by winning the G1 Prix du Jockey Club, has his first European crop of yearlings selling this year.

A statement from Aga Khan Studs read, “His influence is already beginning to live on through his female progeny, as Dalakhani is the broodmare sire of 20 Stakes performers, including recent Epsom Derby runner-up US Army Ranger who is a son of Classic winner Moonstone.”

Dalakhani will spend his retirement at the Aga Khan Studs in France alongside the veteran Linamix (Fr) (Mendez {Fr}), who is now 29.
