Creative Cause's Significant Form Runs Straight, Takes Miss Grillo

Significant Form | Joe Labozzetta

Significant Form (Creative Cause) crossed the wire first in her Aug. 27 unveiling at Saratoga, only to be disqualified for drifting inward and causing interference into the first turn. She put that all behind her Sunday, producing the same result–minus the antics–and capturing the GIII Miss Grillo S. at Sunday. The gray, a $575,000 OBS April 2-year-old purchase for Stephanie Seymour Brant, tracked the pace and pounced in the stretch, holding off the highly regarded pair of Best Performance (Broken Vow) and Orbolution (Orb) to prevail.

After the race, trainer Chad Brown confirmed that the winner likely punched her ticket to the starting gate for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 3.

“I was really impressed with how she fought back late in the stretch when [Best Performance] challenged her,” said Brown. “This win is really encouraging going forward and heading into the Breeders' Cup.”

Significant Form was sent postward at a shade over 3-1 in her career debut and won like a heavy favorite. However, she was placed seventh after triggering a chain reaction of steadying towards the rear of the pack in that grassy Spa maiden race. The filly posted three works in the ensuing weeks and entered this graded stakes event as the heavy favorite.

“In her first start, it was unfortunate situation where she was disqualified, but we understand the decision and the situation,” Brown said. “She's trained forwardly in the mornings since that race and today she got a good trip and really showed great ability.”

Perched on the outside and a bit eager tracking the pace through measured fractions of :24.60 and :49.23, she settled down the backstretch before mounting a menacing bid around the far turn. She struck the front in upper stretch and quickly braced for a pair of challenges from Orbolution and Best Performance, who fanned wide entering the stretch. It was a three-horse scramble into the final furlong, but Significant Form was going best of all and outfinished her foes to notch a decisive victory.

Winning rider Irad Ortiz Jr. said, “She broke good and we were really close. We weren't going too fast. We ran a little slow, so I wanted to just hold my position. I was good where I was. I knew when I'd asked her, she'd be there for me.”

Significant Form is the first horse owned by Seymour Brant, an actress and supermodel.
