Highland Reel | Racing Post

The nominating window for the A$3-million 2040-metre G1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate on Oct. 28 closed on Tuesday with only 141 nominations entered, the smallest in the last four years, racenet.au.com reported. Reigning Australian Horse of the Year Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}), who trialed well at Randwick Tuesday morning, headlines the nominees, and is among 11 from the Chris Waller barn. G1 Schweppes Oaks and G1 Queensland Oaks victress Egg Tart (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}), G1 Coolmore Legacy S. heroine Foxplay (Aus) (Foxwedge {Aus}) and French stakes winner and G2 Villiers S. third Sarrasin (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) also hail from the Waller fold.

There are a total of 15 overseas nominations, with Aidan O'Brien nominating six including internationa globetrotter Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who finished third to Winx last year and G1 Epsom Derby bridesmaid Cliffs Of Moher (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Japan is represented solely by G1 Queen Elizabeth Cup hero Neorealism (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}).

The Cox Plate has been secured only 20 times by 3-year-olds, and 44 were nominated for this year's edition, among them Group 1 winners Catchy (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), The Mission (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}), and Kiwi Group 1 victor Summer Passage (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}).

“We're excited to be able to welcome Winx back to Melbourne and it's satisfying to see international entries from Aidan O'Brien, Saeed bin Suroor, Charlie Appleby and Willie Mullins,” said Racing Victoria General Manager Greg Carpenter. “I'm also looking forward to the Noriyuki Hori-trained Neorealism from Japan who, if he did come, I think could be one to challenge Winx.”
