Clash Of The Sprinting Generations

Another fascinating clash of the generations is in store this weekend after 15 horses stood their ground for Saturday's G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket. Heading the field is the already multiple Group 1 winning 3-year-old Caravaggio (Scat Daddy). The unbeaten colt is one of five 3-year-olds left in the six furlong event along with Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who finished a close second to Caravaggio last time out in the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. The older brigade is headlined by The Tin Man (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}), who occupied the first three placings in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot when only a neck and three parts of a length separated the trio. James Fanshawe is looking forward to saddling The Tin Man for what will be the 5-year-old's first run at Newmarket. “The Tin Man is very well in himself. He did a piece of work on Saturday and, although he has never been a flashy work horse, he seems to have been nice and bright since then. I would imagine that the ground will be riding 'good to firm' come Saturday and, although most of his family like some cut in the ground, he's run very well on firm,” Fanshawe said on Monday.

Aidan O'Brien has left in five other potential candidates to go with his main hope and they include the 3-year-olds Peace Envoy (Fr) (Power {GB}), Intelligence Cross (War Front) and Pedestal (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) along with the older sprinting stalwarts Cougar Mountain (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and Washington DC (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Kevin Ryan will be hoping Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) can give his yard a boost after a tough time while Glass Office (GB) (Verglas {Ire}) could represent David Simcock. Richard Fahey won the July Cup with Mayson (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) back in 2012 and he has left in both Growl (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Mr Lupton (Ire) (Elnadim) while another potential challenger from Yorkshire is David O'Meara's Intisaab (GB) (Elnadim).
