ANDREW CHESSER, Secretary General of the International Federation of Horse Racing Authorities, and Manager of Registration Services, The Jockey Club.

What is the most pressing problem that needs to be tackled in racing, and how would you solve it?

While aftercare, safety and uniformity of rules are important issues domestically, the biggest challenge to racing all over the world is to innovate its product in the face of growing competition from other gambling and entertainment forces. We need to take a hard look at our present wagering and aim to provide to bettors an offering and return on par with other forms of gaming.

What do you think somebody from the outside looking in-somebody not involved in racing-would say the problem that most needs solving is?

I believe that outside observers of racing are often confused at the differing rules, processes, and protocols in place for both participant, fan, and punter. As we continue to grow racing globally, those barriers to trade and the customer experience need to be addressed. Racing should be as understandable and accessible as possible – today's consumer expects it and demands it. Racing also needs to invest further in the digital world, utilizing technology and data to drive a comprehensive experience.
