Castellano, Ramseys & Brown Leading '16 Earners

Jockey Javier Castellano finished 2016 as the leading rider by earnings for the fourth consecutive year, according to figures released Monday by Equibase Company LLC. Ken and Sarah Ramsey was the leading money-earning owners for the third time in four years and trainer Chad Brown was the leading earning trainer for the first time.

Castellano reached the winner's circle 300 times from 1,418 mounts and ended the year with earnings of $26,827,966. Runner-up for the second consecutive year was Irad Ortiz, Jr. with 313 wins from 1,504 mounts and earnings of $23,456,741.

The Ramseys, leading owners in 2013 and 2014, won 131 races from 641 starts and earned $7,458,736 in North America in 2016. When including the results of the Mar. 26 Dubai World Cup card from Meydan Racecourse, the leading owner was California Chrome, LLC with earnings of $8,090,000. Runner-up was Juddmonte Farms, Inc. with 22 victories from 100 starts and earnings of $7,336,758.

Brown, who was runner-up on the earning's list the past two years, sent out the winners of 182 races from 763 starts for earnings of $23,135,084 in 2016. Todd Pletcher, who has led the trainer's list 10 times, finished second in 2016 with his horses having won 274 races from 1,213 starts for earnings of $21,178,642.
