Caravaggio To Stick To Sprinting

Trainer Aidan O'Brien said last year's G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. winner Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) will “be kept to sprinting,” and is unlikely to make the originally intended trip to France on Sunday for the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains. The unbeaten colt was left in the French Classic at the latest scratching stage on Thursday, but O'Brien confirmed Caravaggio is likely to wait for next Sunday's G3 Lacken S. at Naas to make his seasonal debut.

“It's looking like he won't go to France and he'll be kept to sprinting,” O'Brien confirmed. “We'll run Peace Envoy and Orderofthegarter, but Caravaggio is likely to start off in the Lacken S. at Naas.”

Further targets for the dark bay could include Royal Ascot's G1 Commonwealth Cup. Caravaggio won the G2 Coventry S. at that meeting last year.

“He's rapid, he really is, and we've never even tried to see how far he'll stay,” O'Brien added. “He's got so much speed it wouldn't be fair. He's the only horse I've ever seen that actually stumbles when he quickens and he does it so quick. If all goes well at Naas then we'd look at Ascot, but I see no point in taking on his elders when we don't have to, so it would be the Commonwealth Cup.”
