Joining a club whose members include Acatenango (Ger), Mondrian (Ger) and Luso (GB), Stall Ullmann's Guignol (Ger) (Cape Cross {Ire}) made all to record a second success in the G1 Pastorius – Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich on Wednesday. Granted an easy lead under Filip Minarik, the 17-5 shot kept finding as old rivals Iquitos (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Dschingis Secret (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) came at him late and prevailed by a neck from the former, with Dschingis Secret the same margin behind in third.

Guignol ran third to Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) in Hamburg's G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis last July and the G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten the following month prior to running sixth in the G1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club at the San Siro in October and returning home to upset the Godolphin pair Racing History (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and Hawkbill (Kitten's Joy) when 33-1 in this race 12 months ago. Sixth on his comeback in the G1 Prix Ganay over 10 1/2 furlongs at Saint-Cloud May 1, the bay built on that effort when denying Iquitos by a neck in the 11-furlong G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft May 28 prior to running fourth in the July 1 G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis at Hamburg. Rebounding to capture the G1 Grosser Preis Von Baden in September, he had avoided the Arc unlike Iquitos and Dschingis Secret and that may have been the key to this outcome as very little separated Germany's leading middle-distance trio again.

Taken straight to the front and able to lead at a relative crawl, Guignol was kicked on before the home turn and stayed on the far rail as Iquitos was angled wide on the track for his finishing effort. There was enough time for the latter to get to the long-time leader, but the Ullmann homebred was typically game when threatened and thrust himself forward for the win as Dschingis Secret struggled to make a real impact and the G1 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) was just out of the thick of it in fourth.

Guignol's dam is the G1 Oaks d'Italia heroine Guadalupe (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), who also produced the G1 Grosser Dallmay-Preis hero Guiliani (Ire) (Tertullian). Her dual listed-winning and group-placed daughter Guantana (Ger) (Dynaformer) is the dam of three black-type performers headed by the G2 Gerling-Preis scorer Guardini (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}). Guadalupe's full-brother is the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and G1 Grosser Preis von Dusseldorf hero Getaway (Ger), while she is also a half to the Listed Grand Prix de Lyon winner and G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Geoffrey Freer S. runner-up Guadalajara (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}). This is also the family of the five-times group 1-winning Alexander Goldrun (Ire) (Goldaway {Ire}), whose daughter Goldrush (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) is now a dual listed winner. Guadalupe's as-yet unraced 2-year-old filly by Lawman (Fr) is named Guardian Witch (Ire), while she also has a yearling filly by Australia (GB) named Gympie (Ger).
