Candy Favouring Mile For Limato

It is all systems go for dual Group 1-winning sprinter Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) for next month's Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, and trainer Henry Candy is currently favouring a tilt at the GI Breeders' Cup Mile over the 6 1/2-furlong GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

“We are still heading to Santa Anita at the moment,” said Candy. “He seems in good form. He will be entered in both on Monday and we will take a decision later in the week. He will probably run in the mile.”

While Limato's Group 1 wins have come in this year's six-furlong G1 Darley July Cup and seven-furlong G1 Qatar Prix de la Foret, Candy said he thinks the 4-year-old gelding could be comprised if he breaks slow over a shorter trip.

“I feel the sprint is the easier race, but heading down that hill and round the corner–if he has one of his dozy moments in the stalls, which he hasn't had yet, it shall be game over. He will certainly get a mile on a flat track.”

Limato finished fourth, beaten 2 1/2 lengths, in his lone try over a mile in this year's G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. That performance aside, he has finished first or second in all 13 starts.
