Brown Stars in Good Order Following Big Saturday

Lady Eli | Sarah K. Andrew

Chad Brown, who enjoyed a stellar Saturday with four graded stakes wins in New York and Kentucky combined, reported that his entire contingent emerged from their races in fine condition Sunday morning. Brown said the Lady Eli (Divine Park) and Sea Calisi (Fr) (Youmzain {Ire})–first and third, respectively, in the GI Flower Bowl S.–will both target the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf Nov. 5 at Santa Anita. It was Lady Eli's second start since returning from a nearly 14-month layoff due to a bout with Laminitis, and she earned a “Win and You're In” spot in the World Championships due to her success.

“Lady Eli was impressive, it was a wide trip and she was able to overcome it all,” Brown said. “I was really happy to see her win again. It takes such a rare horse to overcome what she has and to make it all the way back to the Breeders' Cup. I think she's one of the all-time great turf mares.”

Brown has more reason to be optimistic about the future after running first and third in the GI Champagne S. with Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence's pair of Practical Joke (Into Mischief) and 'TDN Rising Star' Favorable Outcome (Flatter). The former kept his unbeaten record in tact, adding to a previous score in the Sept. 5 GI Hopeful S. with a gritty nose tally over Syndergaard (Majesticperfection), while the latter was making the second start of his career. Practical Joke also earned a “Win and You're In” berth in the GI Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

“They both came out of the race good,” Brown said. “Practical Joke was very impressive overcoming that start and being able to come up in time and win a close decision. I also thought Favorable Outcome was probably a little too close to that fast of a pace for him. I think he's better making one run, it might have taken away some of his kick being that close, but I thought he ran well to stay on for third.”

Brown also won Keeneland's GII TCA S. with Irish Jasper (First Defence) and swept the trifecta in the GIII Hill Prince S. with Camelot Kitten (Kitten's Joy), Beach Patrol (Lemon Drop Kid) and Annals of Time (Temple City). The conditioner said that Camelot Kitten and Beach Patrol will likely both make their next starts in the GI Hollywood Derby at Del Mar Dec. 3.

Trainer Todd Pletcher reported that Syndergaard came out of the Champagne in good order and is under consideration for a rematch with Practical Joke in California.

“He looked good this morning,” said Pletcher. “It was a tough beat. He went pretty fast early but showed a lot of courage. He dug in and fought hard. He was in front right before the wire and right after the wire. It's just one of those tough head bobs. We'll take a few days and discuss it with everyone, but I think he ran well enough to keep the Breeders' Cup in mind.”
