Bolo Back in a Big Way in the Arcadia

Bolo proved well worth the wait with this impressive return to the races. The handsome dark bay, hero of the grassy Eddie Logan S. at two, punched his ticket to the GI Kentucky Derby with a pair of third-place finishes behind Dortmund (Big Brown) in the GII San Felipe S. and GI Santa Anita Derby. He could do no better than 12th on First Saturday in May, then returned to the grass later that month with a wire-to-wire allowance tally in Arcadia May 29. Bolo showed early speed and tired badly to finish last of nine as the 2-1 favorite in the GI Belmont Derby July 4. Vanned off following that outing, Bolo was working well for his return in this ambitious spot. Placed in a tracking second through fractions of :22.70 and :45.67 as heavily favored Obviously did his thing up front, Bolo never said die in the stretch as his rival held a two-length advantage, and kept on coming to get there just in time.

“The horse had a terrific trip,” trainer Carla Gaines said. “All I told Flavien [Prat] was to let him break and find his place in the race. I felt he'd be sitting right behind the leaders and he would still have a kick home. That's exactly what happened. I'm just so thrilled. Did I think he was going to there? I'm not sure. I was screaming very loud.” Gaines added that options for Bolo's next start include either the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile on grass Mar. 12 or the GI Santa Anita H. on the main track the same day.

Bolo's dam Aspen Mountain–a half-sister to the dam of GI Kentucky Derby hero Mine That Bird (Birdstone) and MGISW Dullahan (Even the Score)–has a 2-year-old colt by Dominus and was most recently bred to Temple City.
