Black Orange Tops Ascot Sale

Black Orange (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}) (lot 46), who was offered by Gay Kelleway Racing to dissolve a partnership, topped Tuesday's Tattersalls Ireland Ascot July Sale when hammered down to Qatar-based trainer and bloodstock manager Debbie Mountain for £54,000. The 2-year-old has won once and been on the board three times in four starts.

A total of 111 lots were sold on the day for £608,600, at an average of £5,483 and a median of £3,000. The clearance rate was 78%.

Agent Tom Malone bought three lots, headed by the £40,000 Eneko (Fr) (Laverock {Ire}) (lot 118), a 3-year-old who was a last-out winner on June 25.

Tattersalls Ireland Director of Horses in Training Sales, Richard Pugh, said, “It was always going to be challenging to produce a set of statistics comparable to 2016's record-breaking Ascot July Sale, where 24 lots broke the £20,000 barrier, a 75% increase on the year previous. However, today's sale has produced a robust clearance rate of 78% and a top price of £54,000, and has again demonstrated the ability of this unique venue to attract a wide variety of overseas and domestic purchasers. I would like to extend a thank you to our loyal vendors, who have supported the sale and we now look forward to our next sale at Ascot on Aug. 22.”
