Redmondstown Stud's half-sister to the Group winners Turret Rocks (Ire) and Beyond Thankful (Ire) led the second day of fillies and mares at €150,000 as the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale drew to a close.

The Jim Bolger-bred 6-year-old Beyond Intensity (Ire) (Intense Focus) (lot 1238) was sold carrying to another Bolger homebred, Dawn Approach (Ire), and will remain in Ireland to continue her breeding career.

“She's been bought for an established client of mine who has a stud farm in County Meath,” said buying agent Eamonn Reilly of BBA Ireland, who indicated that the G2 May Hill S. winner Turret Rocks (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) will stay in training.

Beyond Intensity, who hails from the further family of multiple Group 1 winners Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) and Gold Splash (Blushing Groom {Fr}), already has a yearling colt by Bolger's home stallion Vocalised (Vindication) and a filly foal by Fastnet Rock.

Happy Henry

Luke Comer accounted for 80 lots during the second session of this sale in 2016 but reduced his purchasing spree to just 14 this year for a total of €88,000. The clearance rate took a small hit, settling at 31%, with 147 horses sold from 212 offered. Turnover was down at €1,635,200, while the average was €11,124 (-6%) and the median also dipped slightly to €5,500 (-27%).

For the sale as a whole, following a year in which the Wildenstein Stables Dispersal added an extra dimension to November trade, the 2017 figures dippped across the board year on year, with an aggregate of €14,924,450(-28%), an average of €43,259 (-17%), while the median has remained constant over the last three years at €15,000. When set against the level of trade two years ago, without a major dispersal, the figures for 2017 have made significant gains in both turnover and average.

As the ring fell quiet on Friday evening, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby reflected on two days of trade, saying, “Galileo dominates wherever he goes and the Goffs Breeding Stock Sale followed the trend at our preceding Foal Sale with four of our top five mares in foal to the world champion. Top prices of €1.9 million, €950,000 (twice) and €750,000 to buyers from France, Japan, Ireland and the UK clearly demonstrate the global and enduring appeal of this sale, and they were the highlights of another incredibly strong renewal of our mare and filly dispersal with strong trade especially at yesterday's opening session.”

He added, “Whilst the bare statistics show a sale that is down, we are quite content as, of course, last year included the once-in-a-generation Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal which saw 28 beautifully bred fillies and mares adding over €7.8 million to the totals. Take those away from last year and the statistics make for very happy reading with turnover average and median all advancing whilst we have made significant gains versus the dispersal free 2015 sale.

“Once again we have received wonderful support from so many leading breeders and are very grateful that they continue to choose Goffs for so many of their best-bred breeding stock. Today's sale may not have hit the heights of the first session but there remained a strong trade from an international group of buyers.”

Moyglare Fillies In Demand

Fillies from another high-class Irish breeding operation, Moyglare Stud, filled several of the top slots on Friday, and lot 1151, the 4-year-old winning Shamardal filly Heartful (Ire), will be heading to Japan after being bought for Kawakami Racing at €100,000.

With G3 Gladness S. winner Mad About You (Ire) (Indian Ridge {GB}) as her dam and the G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Irresistible Jewel (Ire) (Danehill) as her grandam, plus the fact that she's by one of the most desirable broodmare sires of the moment, it's easy to see her appeal to international breeders.

One of Heartful's fellow Moyglare graduates, the 3-year-old Lost In Silence (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) (lot 1153), will stay much closer to home after being bought to join the broodmare band at the Irish National Stud at €65,000.

“It's just such a beautiful family and Moyglare is a highly successful operation,” said Irish National Stud Chief Executive Cathal Beale after signing the ticket for Lost In Silence, a winner at two and a half-sister to GII Monmouth S. winner Speaking of Which (Ire), by the filly's new home stud's flagship stallion Invincible Spirit (Ire).

He continued, “It's a very deep pedigree and it's a family that Moyglare will also keep developing. She'll probably go to Invincible Spirit and is a very exciting purchase for the stud.”

A cluster of the day's higher prices included lot 1149, another young filly, Ugneya (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), from Sheikh Hamdan's Derrinstown Stud. The unraced 3-year-old attracted the attention of Cathy Grassick, who bought the half-sister to G3 Ballycorus S. winner Convergence (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) for €85,000.

“She's been bought for Gerard Kerin of Abbey House Farm, the breeder of Besharah (Ire),” said the agent. “Her dam has colts by Dubawi and Oasis Dream to run for her and it's a lovely deep family.”

The dynasty includes champion miler and recent recruit to the Darley stallion ranks, Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), who shares his grandam Tanaghum (GB) (Darshaan) with Ugneya.

The Goffs November Sale will conclude this weekend with two further sessions of foals. For full results, visit www.goffs.com.
