Bawina & Tale of S'Avall Out of BC

Wertheimer & Frere's Bawina (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Charles Fipke's Tale of S'Avall (Tale of Ekati) were both scratched from their respective Breeders' Cup races Saturday.

Trained by Carlos Laffon Parias, Bawina was scratched from the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf after tying up Wednesday morning. The 4-year-old showed improvement Thursday after jogging on the training track, but after consulting with the veterinarians in the quarantine barn, Laffon Parias decided it was best to scratch the filly.

That scratch allows Shadwell Stable's Talmada (Cape Cross {Ire}) to draw in off the also eligible list for trainer Roger Varian. That runner exits a strong runner-up effort in Woodbine's GI E.P. Taylor S. Oct. 18.

“Very fortunate to hear that Talmada has gained a start in the Breeders' Cup,” Varian tweeted. “Our commiserations go out to connections of Bawina.”

“TDN Rising Star” Tale of S'avall has been ruled out of a start in the GI Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile due to sore feet, according to trainer Barclay Tagg.

“He's been having a problem with sore 'frogs' in his feet,” Tagg commented. “We've been working on the problem all week but the vets recommend that he not run Saturday. He'll be all right going ahead.”

That defection opens up a spot in the gate for Gabe Grossberg's Siding Spring (Warrior's Reward), who will now break from post 14. The bay was last seen finishing third behind stablemate and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf contender Airoforce (Colonel John) in the GIII Bourbon S. over this venue's turf course Oct. 4.

“I hope it's a good omen for our Breeders' Cup weekend,” said trainer Mark Casse.”It's a tough post, but it's better than the 15, and you can't win it if you're not in it.”

As for the surface switch, the conditioner said, “He's trained exceptionally well over the dirt, which is very encouraging. He's got a solid dirt pedigree top and bottom, and he's also got a good distance pedigree. I started him on the turf because the purses at Kentucky Downs were so much better. If I had run him on the dirt instead, I think he would have won. There is no question that he should get the trip, and we're hoping for the best.”
