Bast Proves Best in Del Mar Debutante

A rallying second after a slow start in her 5 1/2-furlong debut behind Inspiressa (The Big Beast) at Del Mar Aug. 11, Baoma Corp's Bast (Uncle Mo) turned the tables on that rival and earned her diploma in style with a blowout win in Saturday evening's GI Del Mar Debutante S.

Adding blinkers for this, the 5-2 chance chased in fourth through an opening quarter in :22.55, hit the gas with a four-wide sweep on the far turn and kicked home smartly to win by 8 3/4 lengths. Inspiressa was second as the 7-5 chalk; 'TDN Rising Star' Comical (Into Mischief) was third.

Bast becomes Hall of Famer Bob Baffert's eighth winner in the Debutante and his first since Executiveprivilege scored in 2012. Baffert, of course, also saddled the brilliant American Pharoah to a second out maiden victory in the 2014 GI Del Mar Futurity.

“She needed the blinkers the first time, but I wanted to get a race in her before the Debutante,” Baffert said. “She came back after that race and worked so well I knew she was ready to go. The blinker is really minimal. We'll definitely look at the [GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies] and races like that down the road.”

Pedigree Notes:

A $500,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select yearling in 2018, Bast is the first foal out of Laffina, who also has a yearling colt by California Chrome and had a filly earlier this year by Pioneerof the Nile. Laffina is out of MSP St Lucinda (St. Jovite), whose five stakes performers include GSW & GISP Mananan McLir (Royal Academy). She is also the granddam of 2018 GI Santa Margarita S. winner Fault (Blame) and 2015 GIII Thoroughbred Club of America S. champ Fioretti (Bernardini). Interestingly, Bast's broodmare sire is Arch, whose Preservationist won the GI Woodward S. Saturday and whose 42 stakes winners out of his daughters include champions I'll Have Another (Flower Alley) and Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie). Uncle Mo, of course, is also the sire of Bast, making her inbred 3×2 to the 2010 champion juvenile. She is part of Uncle Mo's fifth crop and his 51st blacktype winner.
