Awesome Again's American Pioneer Impressive in Maiden Breaker

11th-OP, $75,000, Msw, 3-19, 3yo, 1 1/16m, 1:44.46, ft.
AMERICAN PIONEER (c, 3, Awesome Again–Makoma, by Malibu Moon) was sent off the 8-5 favorite in the Saturday finale at Oaklawn off a somewhat troubled debut in which the $230,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase finished a length behind the talented Dazzling Gem (Misremembered), who remained unbeaten in two tries with a comfortable allowance score in his next appearance. Always traveling comfortably here beneath Channing Hill, American Pioneer made steady progress to be just in behind the lead while traveling strongly. Well in hand and in need only of somewhere to run at the final corner, the attractive bay got the room he needed when Goats Town (Dublin) drifted away from the inside, quickened up impressively when popped the question and was ridden out hands and heels the final 40 yards to score by 3 3/4 lengths. The winner covered the distance in a time just 0.62 seconds off the Rebel S. A daughter of GSW Rhapsodic (Dixieland Band), the winner's dam sold for $110,000 carrying American Pioneer at the 2012 Keeneland November sale. She produced a Tale of the Cat colt in 2013, and an Exchange Rate colt last year. Makoma was bred back to Lookin At Lucky. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $58,600.
