Awesome Speed was pounded down to favoritism for his second stakes appearance on the back of a last-out score in the James F. Lewis S. at Laurel Park Nov. 14 and exchanged bumps with rivals from the bell. He settled just behind Aggressive Driver (First Dude)'s right flank through a quarter in 23.66 before inching up to that rival's girth after a half in :46.69. The fractions began to tell on that foe and Awesome Speed seized command, hitting the three-quarter mark in 1:10.69. He cornered fairly wide into the home straight, but fended off a late rally from El Churro (Put It Back), to win a shade comfortably. Purchased by trainer Alan Goldberg for $335,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale after breezing a furlong in 10.1 last March, the new sophomore ran seventh in his Parx debut in August. Awesome Speed got off the mark at Laurel Park Oct. 10. “It looked like he got hit one way and then got hit another [at the start],” said winning trainer Alan Goldberg. “He seems to have really gotten it together, but I've liked him all along. We'll see. Before the race I was thinking we would pass the [GII] Holy Bull [S. Jan. 30] and just try for the [GII] Fountain of Youth [S. Feb. 27], but we'll see.” Awesome Speed has a 2-year-old half-sister by Tizway and a yearling half-sister by Animal Kingdom. His dam was covered by Elusive Quality in 2015.
