+SUNNY SKIES (f, 2, Animal Kingdom–Skyscape, by Marquetry), a well-bet first North American starter for her 2011 GI Kentucky Derby-winning freshman sire, shook off an early challenge and dominated a field of juvenile fillies at Keeneland. Coming in off of a quartet of local breezes, capped off by a three-furlong bullet from the gate in :35 2/5 (1/13) Apr. 21, the chestnut was bet throughout and broke as the 7-10 chalk. Winning an early scramble for the lead, the homebred was pressed by Mamasita (Denman {Aus}) through a :22.69 quarter. Cutting the corner nicely into the stretch, Sunny Skies blew the race open by the eighth pole and rolled home nine lengths to the good under moderate urging. American Alphabet (Dialed In) was second-best. The victress is a half to Sky Cape (Najran), GSW, $452,208. Her dam foaled a colt by Union Rags last season before being paired with American Pharoah. Sales History: $47,000 RNA Ylg '16 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $36,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
