The GI American Oaks, which was not run in its usual spot in late spring this year, will be held Dec. 31 at Santa Anita, the track formally announced when releasing its 2016-17 winter meet stakes schedule Monday. The 1 1/4-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies carries a purse of $300,000. The GI Malibu S. and GI La Brea S. for 3-year-old males and females, respectively– each contested over seven panels–will be held in the track's traditional opening day card Dec. 26, along with the GII Mathis Brothers Mile and GIII San Simeon H. The 81st running of the GI Santa Anita H. will take place Mar. 11, while the $1-million GI Santa Anita Derby–a major final prep for the GI Kentucky Derby–is scheduled for Apr. 8.
