All Hart In Orr Score

Hartnell | Bronwen Healy

Hartnell (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) may be best known as the horse that has finished second to Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) on four occasions, but the 7-year-old is a standout in his own right and recorded his third Group 1 win with a nail-biting first-up score in the G1 CF Orr S. at Caulfield on Saturday. The bay sat towards the back of the field under Craig Williams during the opening stages while last out G2 Australia S. winner Thronum (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) set the tempo. Hartnell made up ground down the side of the course to sit about four lengths off the lead into the bend, while meanwhile another perennial Group 1 bridesmaid, the mare Single Gaze (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}), waited near the back and bottled up on the fence. Swinging four wide at the top of the lane with the Everest third Brave Smash (Jpn) (Tosen Phantom {Jpn}) on his heels, Hartnell used the length of the straight to grind his way to the front and at last got there in the shadow of the wire. Single Gaze and Brave Smash both made late surges, the former up the rail and the latter down the middle of the track.

Hartnell looked poised for a big season in the spring with a first-up score in the G2 PB Lawrence S. over this course and distance, and his reputation was not tarnished by runner-up efforts thereafter in the G1 Makybe Diva S. behind eventual G1 Cox Plate runner-up Humidor (NZ) (Teofilo {Ire}) and in the G1 Underwood S. behind standout mare Bonneval (NZ) (Makfi {GB}). He was a disappointing ninth, however, in the G1 Caulfield S. on Oct. 14 and failed to bounce back three weeks later in the G1 Melbourne Cup when beating just three of 23 home. The bay looked like the Hartnell of old on Saturday, however, and trainer James Cummings told Racing.com an eighth clash with Winx could be in the cards in the G1 Chipping Norton S. on Mar. 3.

“I just had a little funny feeling that if he was to return as good as that, maybe we could target the Chipping Norton second-up and have the fit horse on the scene,” Cummings said. “The horse does sprint well on the fresh side and I do like the idea of keeping him fresh.”

Pedigree Notes…

Bred in Britain, where he had his early education with Mark Johnston, Hartnell is out of the winning Debonnaire (GB) (Anabaa), who has also produced the listed winner and G1 Fillies' Mile runner-up Roz (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Further class appears under the third dam, Suavite (Alleged), who produced the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe victor Suave Dancer (Green Dancer) and dual Italian Group 1 winner Suave Tern (Arctic Tern). Debonnaire's 3-year-old Frankel (GB) colt Hazarfan (GB) has been placed twice for trainer Ed Dunlop, and the mare has a 2-year-old filly to follow by that same sire who cost Narvick International 500,000gns as a yearling. The mare has a yearling filly by Tapit, and those three were all bred by Greg Goodman's Mt. Brilliant Broodmares. There is further influence of the family Down Under, with Arrowfield having bought Phyllis Maud (Ire) (Halling), a half-sister to Hartnell, for 360,000gns in foal to Shamardal at Tattersalls December in 2016.
