Savoir Vivre Takes Grand Prix de Deauville

Introduced in blinkers when winning by 6 1/2 lengths over 11 furlongs at Cologne Apr. 24, Savoir Vivre flopped when fourth as the odds-on favourite for a 10 1/2-furlong conditions race at Munich May 21 and managed only fifth in the G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen again over 11 furlongs at Cologne June 19. Chanced in the G1 Deutsches Derby nonetheless, the chestnut put up a much improved performance to finish a strong-closing head second to Isfahan (Ger) (Lord of England {Ger}) in that July 10 Hamburg Classic and built on that effort to upstage his older opponents in this low-key renewal for a first black-type success. In what turned into tactical farce, the homebred was allowed a soft lead as Maxime Guyon took up pace-setting duties at a crawl. Notably green in front, he was asked to stretch in the back straight as Garlingari (Fr) (Linngari {Ire}) raced apart from the other trio on the far side and the German raider was able to gain a sizeable advantage as his rivals sat and waited. His first challenge came from Erupt, but last year's G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner flattened out to leave Siljan's Saga the only true threat as she bid for back-to-back renewals. Her mission was difficult, with Savoir Vivre still holding on to valuable energy and he held her off for the landmark win.

This race has often served as an early prep for the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, but trainer Jean-Pierre Carvalho was not hot on the idea immediately afterwards. “It was not really the plan to go in front, as he is quite difficult and immature,” he commented. “After he had run such a good race in the Deutsches Derby, I wanted to reintroduce him in a soft race and that is why I didn't want to go to Baden-Baden. With only four runners, it is not always easy to do what you want but he was perfectly ridden by Maxime. I think he is still a little tender for the Arc, which might come too early in his career even though he has a lot of class. He is also in group ones in Cologne and Munich, so we'll see how he comes out of this and make a decision later.” Siljan's Saga's trainer Jean-Paul Gauvain said of the runner-up, “She ran a blinder again, as we all know she is better on softer ground and that is not really the case today. Hopefully, she'll run in the Arc again and we will hope for something.”
